Fear. Shame. Guilt. Isolation. Children. Family. Love. Faith. Lack of resources. Lack of finances. Lack of support. Just some of the complex reasons women who have experienced domestic violence identify for why they stayed in abusive relationships. The question “why doesn’t she just leave” dominates and derails the way we talk about and approach domestic violence. Writer and survivor Beverly Gooden confronted this question head on and ignited a movement with her #WhyIStayed hashtag. He used that to convince her he was a good guy. She lived through 16 years of abuse with him: financial, emotional, mental, sexual, and physical, and suffered through his love affairs. When she finally realized his actions were abuse his family would not believe her. He tried to make her look crazy and accused her of being the abuser. They wanted to keep her quiet so the church wouldn't look bad. Finding even a flicker of positivity in the wake of an abhorrent domestic violence event seems impossible, yet it happened. Christan Rainey, who lost his family to such tragedy, has committed himself to eradicating domestic violence and engaging men in this movement. His efforts have spawned a multi-faceted solution that includes education, activism, training and prevention. The key to Christan’s effort: put men’s role in domestic violence at the forefront of solving the problem and teach men to own their role in breaking the cycle. This is a proactive approach that shifts from cultural norms and values. His training has been adopted by the City of North Charleston, is used by Charleston County School District, and is embodied in South Carolina Senate Bill 3. A full-time father, fiancé, and fire department engineer, Christan Rainey embodies commitment in action. He is the Founder and Director of Men Against Domestic Violence USA and seeks to honor his mother and siblings who lost their life to domestic violence. Now, he’s calling men to take up the same cause through Men Against Domestic Violence (MAD USA), a grassroots organization that’s putting violence at home to rest. Domestic violence, also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, family violence, and intimate partner violence (IPV), is a pattern of behavior which involves the abuse by one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, cohabitation, dating or within the family. [1] Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical aggression or assault (hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, slapping, throwing objects, battery), or threats thereof; sexual abuse; emotional abuse; controlling or domineering; intimidation; stalking; passive/covert abuse (e.g., neglect); and economic deprivation.

Marica’s experience along with her voice to share her story inspired her and created a platform for her to reach, motivate & advocate for others. This platform has a name, called ‘Battered Not Broken, Inc.; it is 501(c)(3) organization providing education, crisis support, empowerment, and resources for individuals currently in crisis or recovering from the physical, emotional and psychological trauma of domestic abuse & violence. Marica uses this platform in to provide programs in the community for youth/ young adults, that aid in the prevention of victimization and perpetration of interpersonal violence. Hindered Help: How Societal Stereotypes Hinder African American Women Intimate Partner Violence Victims from Getting the Help They Need ernadine Y. Waller is passionate about eradicating gendered violence. She is an Adjunct Professor and doctoral candidate at Adelphi University School of Social Work whose trauma-informed work as a clinician inspires her research. Her interests also include developing culturally competent interventions for male perpetrators. She is currently the principal investigator of a project analyzing a UN Women-developed batterer intervention program in Barbados and her work was most recently published in a top academic journal, Aggression and Violent Behavior.
